CHARLIE ALLEN RENOVATIONS
WINS
CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR (CotY) AWARD
Firm Wins Gold Award for Residential Historical Renovation/Restoration
CAMBRIDGE, MA [April 4, 2018] — Cambridge-based Charlie Allen Renovations has won a 2018 Contractor of the Year (CotY) Gold Award for its work remodeling and restoring a fire-damaged, historically significant Victorian home in Somerville. The award was presented at a gathering of the Eastern Massachusetts chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry on Wednesday, March 28.
In December 2014, fire damaged an iconic 1894 Victorian on Belmont Street in Somerville. Teenage prodigy Thomas Marriott James, who would later design the Shubert Theatre in Boston, had designed the home for his parents. When the current homeowners purchased the house in the late 1970s, they hired Charlie Allen Renovations to restore it. After the fire devastated the home, they once again contacted the firm and asked them to bring it back to prominence.
“We were saddened to learn about the fire,” says Charlie Allen Renovations president Julie Palmer. “But we were also honored to take on the task of restoring this majestic house once again. And this time, the homeowners also asked us to add some sensitively-designed improvements, which included updating the kitchen and adding a safety rail to the main staircase.”
The EM NARI Residential Historical Renovation/Restoration category requires that: “All changes should closely match architectural style and building type. Any and all products used are to be of a material authentic in style to the area in which the building was originally built, paying special attention to period trim detail and period coloring. Restoration of missing historic features and added structures are to respect the essential historic character and architectural style of original building design.”
In addition to the Contractor of the Year Gold Award, this project was also recognized with the 2017 Directors Award from the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission.
“This project was both a challenge and a joy. We worked methodically and carefully to honor Thomas Marriott James’ design, as well as the meticulous care and stewardship that our clients have invested in their home,” says Palmer. “We were aided in this process by outstanding project partners, including Jackson Schillaci Woodworking, master finisher Wayne Towle, Jim Anderson Stained Glass, and Belfor. We share this recognition with them.”
